Lotus brings Notes to iPhone with free iNotes ultralight

Your IT - Mobility

IBM has delivered on its promise of Lotus iNotes software for Apple's iPhone, so we iApologise for previous suggestions that there could be some iSlippage.

Lotus Notes is IBM's pioneering groupware application handling email, calendars, contacts and custom applications, and is used in concert with Lotus Domino servers.

Just two months ago, IBM said it planned to deliver mail, contacts and calendar information to the iPhone. We thought IBM's phrasing meant it was hedging its bets and that iNotes for iPhone might not see the light of day until 2009.

Oh we of little faith! The software was out by the end of the third quarter.

iPhone support is delivered in the Lotus iNotes software that forms a part of Lotus Domino Web Access 8.0.2. It also works with the iPod touch.

"Built on the time tested Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure, users can quickly access email, calendars, and contacts directly through the Apple iPhone Safari browser," said IBM officials.

The 'ultralight' mode in iNotes provides limited mail and contacts capability plus a day-at-a-glance calendar.

The email function may be limited, but users can compose, view and reply to messages, and view attachments.

What do early adopters say? Please read on to page two, where you'll also find news of an antispam/antivirus add-on for Notes and Domino.
