Google Android phone: it IS “iPhone exciting”

Your IT - Mobility

Other leaked specs say that its size is 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches, it weights 5.6 ounces, has a 65k colour screen at 480x320 HVGA resolution, offers 5 hours of talk time and 130 hours of standby time, can be expanded with an 8GB (presumably MicroSD) card, has a 3.1 megapixel camera (for photos, not video) and comes with GPS.

No word on 802.11 b/g, but if not, it's just the first Google Android phone, there will surely be many others.

Bluetooth is presumably included but the T-Mo News blog says there is no A2DP stereo Bluetooth, which from memory was because the Google developers didn’t get it all finished on time, with additional Bluetooth functionality to come in future software updates.

Given Google’s ability to get people excited about its applications, given Google’s ability to create apps that people want to use, and given the strong activity around the Google Android App Market, which is its own version of the “App Store”, having a Google phone that will presumably “just work”, and work with Google’s famous apps, is quite exciting indeed.

It will compete very strongly with Windows Mobile devices, at least in for consumers if not businesses, it will compete with the BlackBerry, and it will compete with the iPhone, offering a greater range of software including titles that Apple won't allow.

A flood of apps is likely, just as we've seen for the iPhone. Of course WM6 phones have lots of software, too, but gPhone and iPhone software looks a heck of a lot nicer.

The price is said to be US $199, likely on some kind of plan, and given that it has a nice 5 row slide-out keyboard, it should also be very easy to use for data/email/web address/etc entry.

All of this is yet to be confirmed, and true user experiences are yet to be shared, but the Google phone looks to be very exciting indeed, and presents a very serious challenge to Nokia, Microsoft, Apple and everyone else.

Compared to the iPhone, the gPhone might not be getting queues outside stores, but then the iPhone’s feature set and user interface were world-beating when unveiled and there was a 6 month wait before it could actually be purchased.

From what I’ve seen of the gPhone thus far, something tells me that “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet”!
