iPhone 3G unlock – slow progress, no guarantee it will ever come

Your IT - Mobility

The iPhone Dev Team has issued its latest posting with an update on the iPhone 3G unlock process, while also sharing some of the stats on page views, visitor networks and browsers having accessed the Dev Team’s blog site.

Anyone still waiting on a software unlock for the iPhone 3G can just keep on waiting if the iPhone Dev Team’s latest blog posting is anything to go by... which, of course, it certainly is.

The specifically state that: “While we work on the unlock of the 3G iPhone (we are making slow, but steady progress and we have no estimation of when, or even if we’ll be able to unlock the 3G iPhone)”.

They also share that they’ve had “lots of requests to see some blog usage statistics, so here are some for the last month (July 13th - August 13th 2008).”

Page Statistics:-

    * 6,081,584 page views during July 13-Aug 13 2008
    * 3,394,757 visits during July 13th - August 13th 2008
    * 276,688 unique visitors on July 20th (PwnageTool release 2.0/2.0.1)
    * 165,614 unique visitors on August 8th (PwnageTool release 2.0.2)

Top 5 visitor networks:-

    * #3) Comcast Cable Communications inc. (US) with 117,500 visits
    * #4) Verizon Internet Services inc. (US) with 68,304 visits
    * #5) Comitê Gestor da Internet no Brasil (Brasil) with 49,754 visits

Top 10 browsers by OS :-

    * Safari/Mac  884,139 - 26.04%
    * Firefox / Windows  - 867,198 25.55%
    * Internet Explorer / Windows - 652,988 19.24%
    * Firefox / Macintosh - 504,629 14.86%
    * Safari / iPhone - 273,706 8.06%
    * Safari / Windows - 55,874 1.65%
    * Opera / Windows  - 49,404 1.46%
    * Firefox / Linux  - 38,874 1.15%
    * Safari / iPod  - 27,926 0.82%
    * Opera / Macintosh - 11,013 0.32%

Top 5 browsers overall :-

    * Firefox -   1,411,539 -  41.58%
    * Safari - 1,242,368 - 36.60%
    * Internet Explorer -  653,222 - 19.24%
    * Opera -  63,335 - 1.87%
    * Other Mozilla - 10,667 -  0.31%

So, unless the iPhone Dev Team are purposefully keeping us in the dark over any iPhone 3G unlock breakthroughs or surprises, a true software unlock, (as opposed to one performed with a special “Yessim” or “Turbosim-style” SIM card, which the Dev Team thinks aren’t worth the trouble), is still quite some time away.
