WinPwn 2.0 released, gives Windows-using iPhone owners the power to Pwn!

Your IT - Mobility

Apparently there is a minor bug, for some, regarding the installation of “Cydia” on Windows XP, a bug that will be fixed in an updated version of WinPwn 2.0 (presumably WinPwn 2.0.1) due on the 24th of July, 2008 (US timezone).

The WinPwn site gives basic instructions on how to use the software, some important notes which include the necessity to remove WinPwn 1.0 and to upgrade to iTunes 7.7, and a warning NOT to install or activate the YouTube service if you are connected to AT&T.

There are also two download locations to get the software, and no doubt they are running hot right now for the millions of Windows-using original iPhone owners keen to see what the iPhone OS 2.0 is truly like for themselves.

This is especially the case if these users have a “hacked” iPhone in a country that was not previously supported, or in a supported country but on an unapproved (or previously unapproved) carrier.

The developer of WinPwn thanks the iPhone Dev Team and others for all their assistance, and promises WinPwn will be updated with “some better features” and “help sections over the next few days”.

But do you really want to upgrade to iPhone OS 2.0 if you are an original iPhone user with a previously released jailbreak and/or unlock, happy with use of the Installer.app and all the apps already available?

The short answer is quite possibly no. iPhone OS 2.0 is exceedingly buggy, something that has been very widely reported. You can read about my experiences in an article entitled: “iMessage to Apple: iPhone OS 2.0 sucks”.

Random re-starts, sluggish performance, bricked devices just from downloading an App Store updated program via Wi-Fi, slow camera performance, the intermittent failure of Safari to rotate and more are just some of the iPhone OS 2.0 symptoms.

But despite the problems with the iPhone OS 2.0, plenty of people will want to upgrade anyway, and with reports of the iPhone OS 2.0.1 being seen in server logs on the web, it seems likely Apple will release an update sometime soon.

That said, when it comes to Apple, one can really never tell when they will do whatever it is they are going to do, often waiting and putting up with the problems is the only solution Apple offers until a solution magically appears.

Although I’m both happy and unhappy with the iPhone OS 2.0 in semi-equal measure, some might decide to wait until OS 2.0.1 to appear, and then to wait once more until the iPhone Dev Team do their unlock/jailbreak magic yet again before deciding to upgrade, while others will race out to do it no matter what.

But for those who want to downgrade from 2.0 back to 1.1.4, instructions are here.

It’s worth noting again that WinPwn 2.0 will not unlock the iPhone 3G, only jailbreak it. But if you have an original iPhone 2G, WinPwn will both unlock and jailbreak it.
