Brazilian iPhone 3G “unlock” works, world waits for iPhone Dev Team anyway

Your IT - Mobility

The Brazilian iPhone 3G unlock uses a TurboSIM-like device to fool the Brazilian TIM sim card into thinking its connected to the AT&T Network. Meanwhile, the iPhone Dev Team issues a new update, while some Australians are paying to officially carrier unlock their phones to use Australia’s only non-iPhone carrier, 3 Mobile.

While the news that a Brazilian pair have figured out how to use a TurboSIM style device to fool a Brazilian SIM into thinking it’s on the AT&T network, it’s definitely not a free software unlock, and it certainly isn’t a jailbreak so you can run unauthorised third party apps.

The website with embedded YouTube videos is here, although it's all in Portguese. Using a Portugese to English translation provided by Yahoo’s Babelfish language translation tool, we can see what they say, although I’ve edited it to make the “English translation” easier to read.

“We’re the first ones in the world to unlock the 3G iPhone!

“Attention – we don’t sell iPhones. However we can show an unlocked 3G iPhone – it’s now a reality!

“Once more the DesbloqeuioBr team proves its ability and commitment to its customers.
Breno MacMasi and Pablo Stool figured out how to unlocked the iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0 within less than 24-hours of the iPhone 3G’s launch.

“With this we can smash through the “locked” barriers of the iPhone 3G and 2.0 OS.

“If you’re a fan of the site simply waiting for a free unlock, we will be charging – we really worked to unlock the iPhone 3G while the other hackers team play around.

“More new features soon
Breno MacMasi”

Breno told Gizmodo in the US that “Our procedure consist in using one SIM adapter to simulate a fake IMSI test card. Instead of the AT&T IMSI like in the universals.”

The Canadian Press quotes the group expecting to charge US $250 for the unlock, which seems pretty steep when you consider an official carrier unlock in Australian is much cheaper and a free solution will be available sooner or later.

Meanwhile, the iPhone Dev Team have made their latest announcement and Australian iPhone users who’ve paid to officially unlock their iPhones can confirm the iPhone works with 3 Mobile.
