The big question for original iPhone owners is whether it’s safe to update, or not.
Naturally, those who never unlocked their iPhone for use with any SIM card or jailbreaked it to allow the use of unauthorised third party applications, it’s a different story.
Will the installation of iPhone 2.0 software re-lock the phone, or will it give you an unlocked phone that you can put any SIM into?
That’s the biggest question facing unlockers like myself. Sure, the unauthorised third party apps are way cool, but now that authorised and Apple-approved third party apps are here, the quality of these apps will be even better than some of the great programs we’ve already seen.
If I can use the my existing iPhone with the 2.0 software and plug in my SIM of choice, I’d upgrade right away.
But these details won’t be known until someone tries it, and if it doesn’t work, we then need to wait for the hackers, such as the iPhone Dev Team, and Zibri of ZiPhone fame, to do their magic.
There’s also the question of whether Apple can somehow use push notifications to send any commands to hacked iPhone 2.0 units to somehow “re-lock” themselves.
Re-locking is of course bad, it’ll disable the use of your iPhone until re-activated, and no unlocked iPhone owner wants that to happen.
So, the hacking waiting game begins once more, but for those who never need to unlock or jailbreak their devices, the iPhone OS 2.0 download frenzy is about to begin at last!
