OMG! Telstra iPhone 3G plans – worst in the world?

Your IT - Mobility

The browsing packs don't seem any different to Telstra's other Next G phone calls.

$5 per month gets you a 5MB monthly allowance, after which you are charged $1 per megayte.

The $10 plan has a 20MB allowance, with overage browsing charges still at $1 per megabyte,

The $29 plan has an 80MB monthly allowance, overage charges at also at $1 per megabyte.

The $59 plan has a 200MB monthly download but additional use above and beyond this cap is charged at 0.25c per megabyte.

The $89 plan gives you 1GB of monthly data and the same 0.25c overage cost.

The $119 “browsing pack” gives you 3GB of data and the same 0.25c per megabyte overage charge.

So there seemingly no differences in that regard to existing Next G plans – your data plan for a set amount of downloaded data is separate and with the iPhone 3G you can’t even use it tethered to a computer as you can with other phones Telstra sells.

That’s a real shame – I was hoping the iPhone 3G’s inability to be used as a tethered modem might see special, cheaper data pricing on that basis, but unlike other carriers, Telstra’s answer is no, we won’t make special allowances for the iPhone at all, really. All we'll do is sell it!

You can also select from a number of free bonus choices, although you’ll only get to choose one.

There’s the “Free 24/7” option which lets you call a Telstra mobile phone or an eligible fixed number any time of the day or night, with no connection/flagfall fee, for the first 3 minutes.

The second bonus to chose from is My Hour. This lets you “nominate one hour of the day or night to receive the first 20 minutes free of each voice call made to eligible fixed or
mobile numbers. That is up to 1860 minutes of additional voice calls every month at no extra cost.”
