“Summer vacations provide the perfect context for photo
messaging" says Mark Donovan, Senior VP at comScore Mobile Products,
continuing "sharing a holiday moment with loved ones is undeniably
compelling. The camera phone could replace the postcard as the
preferred mode to say ‘wish you were here’ as even parents and
grandparents are snapping and sending photos from their mobile devices.”
The question of age is also explored by the
Benchmark Study which suggests that in both America and
Europe the fastest rate of growth can be found in the over 45 years
sector. Although American teenagers are also quickly taking to photo
messaging, mimicking their European cousins a few years ago, it is the
adoption of the technology by the older generation that suggests it has
reached a tipping point as far as acceptance of photo messaging is
concerned.
“Camera phones are in the hands of the majority of mobile phone users
and are increasingly a part of the fabric of peoples’ lives, with 78
percent of Europeans and 66 percent of Americans owning a camera phone
today,” said Donovan. “Photo messaging rates have risen steadily month
over month with nearly a quarter of all American mobile phone users and
about a third of Europeans sending or receiving photos in April.”
The actual breakdown for the three months ending in April 2008 as far
as the United States was concerned sees growth of 73 percent for the 45
to 54 years group, 68 percent for 3 to 17 years and 67 percent as far
as the over 55 years sector is concerned. The same period sees 36
percent growth in the over 55 years group, 17 percent for 45 to 54
years and 16 percent for 25 to 34 year olds.
