iPhone 3G mania hots up plus Vodafone Aust pricing revealed?

Your IT - Mobility

Well, despite the fact that Vodafone Australia has not officially set any iPhone plans, our New Zealand cousins have full knowledge of what Vodafone NZ plans to charge.

Unlike the myriad Optus plans, of which there seem to be about five thousand different options, Vodafone NZ has gone for a far simpler iPhone pricing structure, but simpler doesn't seem to be cheaper!

There are three plans, with the following prices in NZ dollars (which ends up being slightly cheaper in Australian dollars).

The plans are the iPhone 250, the iPhone 500 and the iPhone 1GB plan, with these figures referring to the amount of data that is included with each plan per month, with the plans being 24 month, 2 year plans.

These cost NZD $80, $130 or $250 per month and come with 120, 250 or 600 minutes of voice calls per month, respectively.

In Australian dollars, that is $63, $102 or $197 per month.

Each plan comes with 600 included text messages.

Additional costs of calls once you go beyond the allotted included minutes is charged at NZ $0.69, $0.55 and $0.53 per minute, for each plan, respectively.

In Australian dollars this works out at $0.54, $0.43 and $0.42 respectively and it would seem as though the prices are indeed being charged per minute and not per 30 seconds.

Additional text messages are being charged at NZ 20c each after the 600 text messages are reach.

Additional data usage will be charged at NZ $0.10, $0.10 and $0.03 per megabyte – not per kilobyte, which is means an additional gigabyte of usage will cost NZ $102.40 on the first two plans and $30.72 on the most expensive plan.

The cost of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $549, $449 and $199 for the three plans respectively, while the 16GB model will cost $699, $599 and $349.

These prices work out to be, in AUD for the 8GB model: $432, $353 and $156 and for the 16GB model: $551, $472 and $275.

To  buy the iPhone 3G outright from Vodafone New Zealand will cost NZD $979 for the 8GB model and $1129 for the 16GB model. In Australian dollars this works out to be $771 and $890.

So, are these prices any good, or not? How does it compare with similar Optus plans? Please read on to page 3.
