Your IT - Mobility

In May, June and up to the iPhone 3G launch date, the world starts hearing about countries that will officially sell the iPhone. Countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, Italy and more announce they will have the iPhone “later this year”.

A stack of fake iPhone photos are announced, and rumours are flying left, right and centre over what the next iPhone will contain. The smart money is on 3G and GPS, but in the end Steve Jobs still managed to surprise us all.

June 9 2008 is the day the iPhone 3G is officially announced at last, bringing 3G, GPS and new black and white cases, but leaving out video calling, no 32GB model, no better Bluetooth, no cut and paste, no 5 megapixel camera among other missing features, while lowering the upfront cost to only US $199 for the 8GB model and US $299 for the 16GB model.

July 11 2008, the date the world is waiting for, will see the iPhone 3G available in a total of 22 countries, progressing to 70 countries by the end of 2008. It should also see the general availability of the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the App Store, as well as MobileMe.

July 12 2008 – the iPhone 3G is unlocked? It might take longer than that, of course, but the hackers are promising it will happen soon enough.

Onwards: plenty more iPhone apps to come, and no doubt even more speculation as to what the 2009 model of the iPhone will contain!
