iPhone carrier exclusivity officially gone

Your IT - Mobility

Never mind speculation about which carrier might join Vodafone in selling the iPhone in Australia, an announcement on the other side of the world has confirmed the demise of Apple's one-carrier-per-country model.

Vodafone's announcement said the carrier will be selling the iPhone in Australia, Italy and eight other nations.

One the same day Telecom Italia issued the following terse statement: "Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year."

So there you have it - one country, two iPhone carriers.

What we still don't know is whether Apple is sticking to its revenue-sharing demands. That seems unlikely given the staunch resistance reported in some nations, notably China, and Apple's inability to prevent unlocking means it is losing revenue when hacked iPhones leak across borders without being activated on contracts with official partners.

A loosening of the arrangements would also give carriers flexibility to offer full-priced and unlocked iPhones for outright sale (as seen in France), or - as is common practice in many countries - to provide a subsidy in exchange for a contract.
