Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
In an attempt to reduce energy wastage, Nokia is adding a feature to its new mobile phone models to alert owners when the battery has finished recharging.
Interestingly, the new feature will be applied to mass market models first, in an attempt to maximise the total energy saved. The first phones with this alert will be the 1200, 1208 and 1650.
"Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket. We want to reduce this waste and are working on reducing to an absolute minimum the amount of energy our chargers use," said Kirsi Sormunen, Nokia's vice president of environmental affairs. "The new alerts also play an important role, encouraging people to help us in this goal by unplugging their chargers."
Nokia says its chargers already meet or exceed US and EU standards for energy efficiency, and it is working on reducing the electricity wasted when chargers are plugged in but not connected to a phone.
So-called 'phantom loads' - devices plugged into a live mains socket but not actually being used represent a significant waste of energy. If left plugged in, lightly used devices such as chargers (and just about anything that runs from a plug pack) typically consume more energy over the time they are sitting idle than they do during use.
