The ruling ups the stakes in the battle against peer to peer users, as a precedent now exists for the RIAA to compensate wrongfully-sued defendants for their legal costs, reports Wired.
Oklahoma mother Debbie Foster was originally sued by the Recording Industry Association of America in November 2004, with her daughter Amanda added to the complaint in July 2005. The case was dismissed last year and today the RIAA was ordered to pay her legal fees.
The ruling comes as 16 year old Robert Santangelo lodges a countersuit against the RIAA. He was was reportedly just 11 when he allegedly downloaded music illegally.
