3's HSDPA comes to Sydney

Your IT - Home IT

Following the launch of its HSDPA service in Brisbane in November,  3 has introduced HSDPA in Sydney and says it will complete the upgrade throughout its network by the end of March.

Data speeds will range from 600kbps to 1.5Mbps with theoretical maximum speeds of up to 3.6Mbps.  HSDPA-enabled devices already available from 3 are two Dopod windows smart phones (838Pro & 595) and a data card for wireless broadband access.

3's wireless broadband card is in the new PC Express form factor which new laptops on the market support. It comes with a caddy to enabling it to be used in older PCs with only a PCMCIA slot. All the other networks have chosen PCMCIA for their initial HSDPA data cards.

The 3 data card retails for $399 but is free on a two year $49 per month contract that includes 1Gbyte of data per month. However this data must be downloaded from the 3 network: outside 3's coverage area the card will roam onto the Telstra network, but downloads via this network will cost $1.65 per megabyte.

3 says it will introduce HSDPA-enabled mobiles for the mass consumer once the full national HSDPA upgrade is complete.
