Six months after delivering Flash Player 9 for Windows and Mac OS X, Adobe Systems has finally got around to releasing a version of the new generation multimedia client for the open source Linux platform.
Adobe claims to have more than 700 million Flash
users on Internet-connected PCs and mobile devices throughout the
world. Flash Player 9 for Linux runs scripts up to 10 times as fast as
the previous version and provides advanced features for graphics, video
and text.
Not having access to the latest version of Flash has been a hindrance
for both Linux-based Web surfers, who have been preventing from
accessing many of the latest interactive websites, as well as Web
developers for the Linux platform, who wish to provide Web 2.0 types of
applications.
With the provision of Flash 9 for Linux, developers will be deploy rich
Internet applications using the free Adobe Flex 2 Software Developers
Kit, Adobe Flash Player 9 and the free Flex Data Services 2 Express.
“With the proliferation of video on the Web, Adobe Flash Player is
quickly becoming the de facto industry standard for delivering engaging
interactive content and applications,” said Emmy Huang, senior product
manager at Adobe. “Now the Linux community has full access to the high
volume of Flash content and applications available on the Internet
today, bringing Linux developers and users to the forefront of the Web
2.0 experience.”
The two largest commercial Linux providers Red Hat and Novell both
welcomed the announcement and will include Flash 9 in their new
distributions.
“Offering our users Adobe Flash Player 9 for Linux helps Red Hat
deliver the desktop capabilities Linux users want, and is an indicator
of the growing demand for rich Internet applications certified for Red
Hat Enterprise Linux," said Tim Yeaton, Senior Vice President of Red
Hat Enterprise Solutions.
“Adobe Flash Player 9 delivers high-quality performance, a more secure
viewing experience and an enhanced programming model that will help
further advance SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop as the top Linux desktop

and Open Platform Solutions at Novell.
