Microsoft fixes Mac Office

Your IT - Home IT

Microsoft has moved relatively swiftly to squash bugs in Word 2004 and Word v.X for Mac that allowed code contained in specially crafted documents to gain control of the computer.

The fixes are contained in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.1 Update and Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Security Update (2006-12-12) which also deliver "several updates to enhance security and stability" according to Microsoft.

While a successful exploit requires users to be tricked into opening deliberately malformed files, that wouldn't be too hard if the intention was to attack a specific target in order to get a backdoor into an organisation's network.

This month's 'Patch Tuesday' releases from Microsoft do not appear to include fixes for the same flaw in the Windows versions of Word (2000/2002/2003) or Word Viewer 2003.
