Adobe flaw remotely exploitable

Your IT - Home IT

A flaw in Adobe Download Manager could allow a remote attacker to take control of the computer, Adobe has warned.

This "critical" vulnerability is present in Download Manager 2.1 and earlier for Windows and Mac. Adobe recommends the affected software should be uninstalled and replaced with version 2.2, which was released earlier this week.

According to Adobe, the flaw is a buffer overflow. If you'll excuse our schadenfreud, we can't help pointing out that we wouldn't face these problems if the industry hadn't got into the habit of using languages created for systems programming rather than applications development (ie, C and its derivatives), or if Intel had been quicker to enforce the separation of code and data as mini and mainframe vendors had done for years.

Download Manager is a utility most often installed when people download a copy of Reader or other software from Adobe's web site.
