Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The world's most popular social networking site MySpace has increased its efforts to redeem its reputation of being a destination of choice for sexual predators and pedophiles looking for easy prey.
A part of the renewed MySpace effort is to check
its membership against a US national registered offenders database.
However, many child protection groups are not satisfied with the action
which only addresses the known offenders.
One of the major problems is that the nature of the Internet makes it
virtually impossible to verify that the details provided by registrants
are genuine with regard to personal details, including their age.
Laws are currently under review in the US which will require known sex
offenders to register all their email addresses. However, policing such
laws will be difficult and they will have no impact on first time
offenders.
MySpace, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, currently has
about 50 million visitors a month, is one of the most popular web
destinations in the world and a high proportion of its member base are
young teenagers.
Since News Corporation bought MySpace in 2005 for US$580 million, the
site has been wracked with controversy. MySpace has been banned at many
schools but continues to grow in popularity. Last month, Universal
Music Group launched a legal suit against MySpace, alleging copyright
infringement.
