Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Berggi claims to have signed up 100,000 users in a trial campaign in the US and says 'consumers can begin accessing the service on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, at www.berggi.com."
Berggi is the brainchild of several European mobile technology luminaries including founder and chairman Jorge Mat, CTO Raul Lorenzo and CEO Babur Ozden. "From the outset, Berggi has had a simple mission: to bring mobile messaging to the masses," said Ozden. "That means developing a service that can easily run over any phone, over any service, and at a price point that makes sense to the average consumer."
Berggi says its technology gives consumers access to email from multiple accounts, to instant messaging from Yahoo!, AIM, MSN and GoogleTalk and to text messaging. Customers do not need a new account or a data plan from their cellphone service. "Consumers simply pay $US9.99/month, which appears on the monthly phone bill," according to Berggi. It does not explain how this charge is applied and makes no mention of commercial agreements with cellular service providers. However, it does say that the service is not compatible with Sprint and Nextel.
It claims that, unlike browser-based solutions "the Berggi service is accessed by downloading a small but robust 'thick client' that provides consumers with an environment expertly optimised for the way they actually live, work, and play."
Berggi claims that all that is required is an Internet or data capable phone, and says most phones purchased since 2004 fall into this category. BlackBerries, Treos and PDAs are not supported (however the Berggi website does not specify exactly what devices are embraced by this loose definition).
The company says it will launch the service in Britain, Italy, Mexico and Turkey in the fist half of 2007.
