Another 'Big Brother' offering on Telstra's Next G?

Your IT - Home IT

With its main union up in arms about the GPS-based workforce efficiency system installed in 7000 Telstra vans, Telstra has launched another location based offering on Next G:  the Xora Time Track solution.

According to Telstra, the Xora application is "a location-based mobile workforce management system that enables companies to easily and inexpensively automate employee timesheets, and to monitor job activity and physical location in real time." Telstra will the first organisation outside the US to offer this business efficiency tool.

According to Xora CEO, Sanjay Shirole, "Employees can feed back information when they clock in for work, or start or end a job, by entering that data directly into the phone using a simple, one-click interface, and the time and location are captured automatically."

He claimed that "The information can then be used to generate accurate and detailed reports for costings, payroll and billing, and provide better business planning and customer service."

One of the achievements Telstra bragged about during its October 6 Investor Day was how it had increased the efficiency of its 7000 strong field technician workforce by equipping vehicles with GPS and field force automation systems. It is also offering the same system, from US company @road, to its customers.

However Telstra's largest union, the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) has called for a halt to installations of the equipment until clear guidelines about its use can be agreed on. It has also advised its members not to consent to having these devices placed in their vehicles.

According to Telstra, TimeTrack has been available for some years in the United States, "enabling thousands of businesses to move away from inefficient paper-based processes for managing a mobile workforce."

Founded in 1999, Xora has raised more than $US13 million in venture capital and is privately funded; the lead investor is Dawntreader Ventures. Xora partners include Telstra, Sprint, Motorola, Sun, Oracle, and RIM. More information at www.xora.com.au
