Microsoft has released Australian pricing for Windows Vista, revealing that its high-end version of the new operating system will actually cost more than a well-configured desktop or as much as a low-end notebook computer.
The price for a copy of the top of the range
Windows Vista Ultimate is a whopping AUD$751 to buy off the shelf,
which effectivey doubles the price of a fully configured desktop
computer.
According to a hardware reseller and systems integrator, who wishes to
remain anonymous, they can expect to get about a 20% discount on Vista,
which in most instances they would pass on to the consumer. Thus, the
Vista Ultimate component of a new brand name PC will be about AUD$600.
While Microsoft Office 2007 pricing has not been announced, prices of
about AUD$500 to AUD$800 (leaving aside much cheaper student editions)
have been postulated. Thus, Australia has reached a point where the
hardware component of a new Windows PC loaded with Office 2007 will be
somewhere between 30% to 40%.
The full Vista price range for Australia as released by Microsoft is thus:
- Windows Vista Home Basic AUD$385
- Windows Vista Home Premium AUD$455
- Windows Vista Business AUD$565
- Windows Vista Ultimate AUD $751
