Google website hopes to bridge literacy divide

Your IT - Home IT

Google has launched a website devoted to promoting literacy through a variety of media, including books, articles, videos, maps, blogs, and online forums.

The Google.com/literacy project was launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair together with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and the Fair's LitCam literacy campaign.

According to Google, literacy organizations across the globe have helped in offering content for the site.

One of the projects from the Indian film and TV industry called PlanetRead employs Same Language Subtitling (SLS) to give subconscious reading practice for 30 minutes a week to more than 200 million early-literates in India, operating via 10 TV programmes in 10 languages.

Resources available on the site include:

-- Books: find and search within books about literacy, reading promotion, and education.

-- Academic Texts: search for literacy-related content in peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.

-- Video: See what literacy organisations, schools, and educators around the world are doing to promote literacy -- or share your own project with the world.

-- Blogs: Share your knowledge and ideas about literacy with the world by creating a "blog" -- short articles and stories that you write for others to read.

-- Groups: Discover forums on literacy projects and ideas or start your own debate.

-- Maps: Find literacy organisations around the world.
