here's nothing new about offering discounts to tertiary students and staff - Apple's been doing it for decades, to give just one example. But we haven't previously heard of a storage vendor taking that route.

Via its online store, WD is offering university staff and students a 20% discount on all products.

A once-off registration using a university email address is a prerequisite for obtaining the discount.

While backup is an important consideration for students ("my computer died" should not be an acceptable excuse for failing to submit an assignment!), the offer is not restricted to WD's storage products.

The inclusion of remote access in some WD storage products also gets around the "I forgot to bring it" problem.

Also included in the discount program are the WD TV Live media player and My Net dual-band routers.

Shipping is free on orders over $150.
