Nokia brings Microsoft's Live Search to handhelds

Your IT - Home IT

Nokia and Microsoft have teamed up to make Microsoft's Live Search service a menu option on Nokia cellphones based on its S60 platform.

Live Search, according to Nokia, "will provide advanced web search results in 14 languages to enable on-the-go access to the information and content consumers want most." Live Search is the latest addition to a range of search service providers  signed up for Nokia Mobile Search since the service was launched in August 2005.

The original partners were Eniro, Fonecta, Medio Systems, Yahoo!, Yell.com, as well as digital map solution provider AtlasCT and digital map data provider NAVTEQ.  However access to Yahoo! did not become available until early September 2006, and then not for Australian users.

In Europe one of the service providers is Yell.com,  the European equivalent of Telstra subsidiary Sensis' Yellow Pages (just rebranded Yellow). Yesterday Sensis announced a new service, Yellow Mobile, /providing access the Yellow (Yellow Pages) directory database customised for mobile phones. A similar agreement with Nokia as that struck with Yell.com in Europe would be an obvious way to further extend access to Yellow directories from cellphones.

However, so far, Live Search is the first, and only search provider on Nokia Mobile Search to be available in the Australian market. The service has 16 selectable region options, one of which is Australia.
