Yahoo has opened the doors to the beta version of its new email system for users in the US and another 18 countries around the world, including Australia and New Zealand and major markets of Asia and Europe. The new web-based system has an AJAX interface, giving it the look, feel and performance of a desktop email client, according to Yahoo.
The use of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and
XML), the same technology behind much of the web services applications
such as Google's Writely and other online wordprocessors, has enabled
Yahoo to develop an email product that for the first time could pose a
viable alternative to dektop clients.
The new Yahoo Mail beta also includes an integrated calendar, similar to Microsoft Outlook.
Current generation web mail systems, unlike desktop clients, suffer
from unwieldy interfaces and poor performance. However, they have the
advantage of enabling users to access their mail from any computer with
an internet connection at any location. AJAX technology enables dynamic
changes to web pages without the whole page needing to be reloaded for
each change, giving a desktop-like feel to web applications.
While AJAX is widely touted as the future of web services, however,
potential issues with security have been flagged because its
interactive nature.
