AMD has well and truly broken through the barrier with Dell as the computer announced new desktops today that for the first time include AMD processors.
In May, Dell, the last of the major Intel only
computer makers, announced its first ever deal with AMD to include
Opteron processors in its server range. Since that time, the market has
been waiting on an announcement concerning AMD chips in Dell desktops
and notebooks.
Dell today unveiled four new desktop models, two of which contain AMD
processors. The new Dimension E521 and C521 Dell home or small office
dektops will include AMD Athlon or Sempron processors.
However, Intel has by no means been abandoned by Dell, with the
rollout of two new Intel-based desktops. The E520 offers either a
dual-core Pentium D or the new Core 2 Duo 64-bit processor. Dell has
also released a business desktop, the OptiPlex 745, which includes a
Core 2 Duo processor.
The announcement of a deal in the low-end consumer space with Dell is a
big boost for AMD because that is by far its weakest market. The next
hurdle for AMD is the Dell notebook range.
