Belkin joins 802.11ac push

Belkin is about to join the ranks of home networking vendors with products supporting the new 802.11ac wireless network standard that promises significantly greater speeds.

The Belkin AC1200 DB Wi-Fi Dual Band AC+ Gigabit Router is scheduled to ship in the middle of this month, and will cost $279.95.

In addition to 802.11ac support for a link rate up to 1167Mbps (300Mbps on 2.4GHz and 867Mbps on 5GHz), the router includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports.

While relatively few ISPs offer IPv6 to their residential customers at this stage, the AC1200 (like a growing number of network products) is ready for the new protocol.
Other features include automatic prioritisation of video and gaming traffic, a DLNA media server, and parental controls.

"With a majority of video content being consumed on devices such as smart TVs, smartphones, and tablets instead of a home computer, today's tech-savvy families have an increasing need for simultaneous connections to multiple devices throughout their homes," said Mike Chen, senior director of Belkin's networking business.

"The enhanced speed and expanded coverage of Belkin's AC router enables families to achieve the truly seamless online experiences they crave."
