In an effort to refine the breadth and depth of information provided by Google's Maps service, the company is soliciting user-derived content.

In a blog entry posted earlier today, Google maps' Software Engineer Nilesh Tathawadekar asks us to:

"Help share Australia's natural gems with tourists and locals alike by drawing the hiking trails through the Eucalypt forests of Tasmania or adding all the campsites surrounding Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Then, once you're ready for some rest and relaxation, why not map the beach resorts of Kangaroo Island, all the best restaurants along the Coral Sea of Queensland, or your favourite billabong for a day of fishing? You can even add your neighbourhood rugby club before heading off to a game."

This service has been available to other parts of the world for some time, but is now available in Australia.

The service also includes a mapping community site to permit collaborative development of mapping extensions.

Currently there are amateur (and not so amateur) cartographers from over 200 countries helping to build the world map.

Of course all submissions will be moderated.

Those interested may wish to subscribe to the YouTube Map Maker Channel for more information.
