Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
It may be showtime for Apple on September 13 but for online retailer Amazon.com the curtain is up right now with a new video download service.
Amazon Unbox enables users to download movies to keep for between
US$9.99 and US$14.99. TV shows can also be downloaded for US$1.99.
The content for Amazon Unbox, comes from major studios such as 20th
Century Fox and MTV, will be copied protected with digital rights
management so that it can only be viewed on computers or portable video
players that use Mcrosoft's Windows Media Player.
Amazon, which hasn't exactly set the world on fire with its market
performance in recent times, is a major retailer of DVDs through its
online store.
The question for Amazon, as well as Apple, is whether the market is
ready for or even interested in online video downloads. There are
already video download sites, such as Guba and Movielink, that have so
far not drawn huge throngs of eager downloaders.
One problem appears to be that the broadband infrastructure is still
not ready - particularly in the US - to support reasonably fast
downloads of the huge multi-gigabyte video files. Another problem is a
restriction on burning downloads to DVD for paying users.
While the movie download business languishes, enthusiasm for free short
videos on sites like YouTube has gone through the roof.
