AMD bounces back with new look Opteron

Your IT - Home IT

After a couple of weeks of smarting and licking its wounds after a vicious assault from Intel which recently released its new Xeon 5100 server processors, AMD has bounced back with the announcement of its new generation dual-core Opteron range, the Rev F.

The big feature being touted by the new Rev F Opetron chips is support for virtualization, which matches what Intel has already has in its new Xeon chips. Virtualization, which allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously within virtual machines, has become the latest efficiency boosting strategy to make full use of under utilized servers.

The new AMD Opteron chips are expected to be included in server systems from Sun, HP, IBM and Dell and are an important part of AMD's strategy to shore up its hard won 20% plus market share and push on to its 30% goal by 2008.

The server space, in which AMD has an estimated 26% market share, is counter balanced by the company's weakness in the consumer desktop area, where AMD's share languishes in the single digits.

The next battle field will be in the quad-core processor space and Intel is keen to halt AMD's advance with plans to rush a quasi quad-core package of two Xeon dual-core processors to the market by the end of 2006. AMD plans to release a true quad-core processor, with four cores on a single die by mid-2007.
