Microsoft Vista upgrade a killer for Win 2000 users

Your IT - Home IT

The upgrade path to Vista is going to be a difficult, complicated and costly for most business users if we are to believe Microsoft's published report.

Windows 2000, still the most widely used version of Windows in business, will require a clean install for the upgrade. This means all files and settings will need to be backed-up and reinstalled, a horrific exercise in large enterprises.

Windows XP home edition users, however, can upgrade without a re-install. Thus, home users may well be using Vista for up to two years before businesses start to filter over.

Many businesses may not make the move at all, preferring instead to make the transition to an open source solution, given the relative ease of the move may not be that much more difficult than the move to Vista.
