Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Microsoft, the ultimate proprietary software company, plans to impose fees on users who wish to download Office 2007 Beta 2. Could this possibly be the beginning of an online software delivery model from Redmond?
According to Microsoft, the Beta 2 is so popular that the software giant has to charge to offset the cost of its servers - unless you live in Australia where you will no longer be able to download the beta anymore.
With reportedly more than 3 million downloads already, the US$1.50 per
download going forward could add up to a tidy sum but is just small
change for a company which last year sold just under US$12 billion of
Office products at a profit of over US$8 billion.
Even though the downloads have many times more plentiful than Microsoft
expected, it's hard to see why the company wants to charge for a beta
release.
However, the unexpected popularity of the download delivery model may
have sparked some thoughts at Redmond about making Office 2007
available as a download. If so, Microsoft would probably want to do a
dry run including payment systems over the net. Currently users can
only order the software from Microsoft on a CD.
