Blu-ray titles mark red letter day for Sony

Your IT - Home IT

It's handy being a massive conglomerate like Sony when you happen to be backing a high definition video format like Blu-ray. True Blu-ray is more expensive than its rival HD DVD but, unlike HD DVD backer Toshiba, Sony appears to have all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle in place.

It's true that Blu-ray is more expensive than HD DVD but then again you get a lot more storage for your money. What's more, being later to market than its rival does not appear to have harmed the Blu-ray format's chances of winning the two horse race.

However, the two things that Sony has that give it an edge is the company's tie-in with the motion picture industry through Sony Pictures and the backing of most of the other major film companies and its market leading role in gaming industry.

At present, HD DVD backers can crow about how their platform is so much cheaper. However, a few months from now PlayStation 3 will be released to the market. At US$599 for a games console that includes a fully functional Blu-ray player may sound expensive to gamers but for high definition video buffs it will be a steal.

Right now, seven Blu-ray titles have just been released in the US by Sony Pictures to coincide with the release of the newly launched US$999 Samsung Blu-ray player. The pressure is now on the HD DVD backers to start matching the Blu-ray camp in the content stakes. How it pans out over the ensuing months prior to the release of PS3 should be an interesting battle to watch. Ever since Sony got whipped in the VCR contest a few decades back, the company has been vying for a rematch. That day has now arrived.
