Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Former web browser kingpin Netscape will rise like a phoenix from the ashes this Thursday to be reborn as a news aggregation and blogging site. While the formula that Netscape plans to use to aggregate and present the news is not entirely clear from early reports, the site will be interactive with the placement of stories depending on a combination of technology, reader input and editorial oversight.
Netscape, now owned by the giant Time Warner media enterprise, was once
the most popular web browser until Microsoft killed it by integrating
Internet Explorer with Windows.
As opposed to traditional news media, the internet is spawning a new
wave of news journalism that involves aggregating information from a
variety of sources and lending itself to both reader and editorial
real-time commentary. The method of news aggregation and presentation
varies between different sites but, unlike with traditional media,
content providers from all parts of the world are given a share of
voice.
The Netscape news site will present links to stories posted by readers,
with comments and original stories posted by in house editors. Stories
will be ranked according to a complex formula combination, which
includes how popular the story is, how old and how important the
editors think it is. The higher the ranking of the story, the higher up
the page it will appear.
Netscape is hoping to carve a niche for itself among news content
aggregators, using the traffic the site attracts to generate
advertising revenue.
