Birthday party attracts 180,000 attendees on Facebook

Thousands of Facebook users have been left all dressed up and no place to go, after a planned 16th birthday party went viral, with almost 180,000 people 'attending' before the party was cancelled.

The party, for Chatswood girl Jess Cooper, is reminiscent of Corey Worthington's Myspace effort a couple of years ago and was described on the event page as an 'open house' party, a phrase taken a little too literally by punters.

The event attracted guests from not only around Australia but also around the world, and listed the 15 year old's mobile phone number as well as address. It was finally cancelled this morning.

The girl, a Year 10 student, reportedly meant the invitation only for her friends but said in the event that they could invite friends of their own.

If it was to take place, the party surely would eclipse that of notorious party boy Corey Worthington, whose party went viral on Myspace and attracted thousands of teenage revellers.

It remains to be seen whether partygoers will attend Jess's house despite the event's cancellation, and whether or not she will host another party in its place.
