Internode upgrades and streamlines backhaul network

Your IT - Home IT

Internode says it has significantly increased its backbone network capacity around Australia in response to growing customer traffic generated as a result of the uptake of new broadband plans that offered data at lower costs per Mbyte than then their predecessors.

Internode now has a total of five 10Gbps links between Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra, a 150 percent incease in capacity, has increased its capacity to Tasmania by 80 percent and its overall capacity by 130 percent.

Internode's network architect, Daryl Collins, said the overhaul had also produced a more efficient network design. 'We've managed to replace 24 small-capacity links with these five high-capacity links.

"As well as making our national network simpler to manage, getting rid of that plethora of smaller links allows us to use our network much more effectively."

The company said that a primary driver for the upgrade had been the popularity of new plans released in the second half of 2010. In September 2010 Internode introduced its T-Shirt plans, so named  because Internode has used T-shirt sizing to distinguish between the different data quotas: S is 100GB, M 200GB, L 300GB, XL, 600GB and XXL 1000GB.
