Australian startup company, monikker, has developed technology that enabled a calling party to decide what ringtone a called mobile phone should play, and what pictures should appear on the screen when they call.
The service is the first of a range of planned offerings under the banner of what monikker calls 'Call 2.0'. Its overarching theme is that with telephony as it is today the only revenue option is the basic connectivity service and the margins operators can earn from calling are rapidly being eroded.
With its 'Call 2.0' technologies it envisages operators being able to add value in various ways to the basic call, and generate revenue. "Visual Ringback, Pre-call Advertising and Multimedia IVR are some of the services currently under development, which will present information and call options at the front of the call," the company says.
A prerequisite for monikker functionality is for both parties to have downloaded and installed
the monikker app. The monikker application runs on Nokia Series 60 and Windows Mobile phones. iPhone and Android versions are promised shortly.
With the app, the company says, "callers can express themselves on the calls they make by choosing the picture or animation that will 'ring' on their friend's phones. They can share their latest photo of add text to created their own personal greeting and can set different personal call greetings for different people. With a few clicks of their app they can change their call greeting and surprise their friends on each and every call. Businesses can also create their call greeting to customers by simply uploading their business logo or even marketing messages.
"Users who have opted for the service can have inbound calls ring with targeted full screen animated advertisements. Ads are saved with further information in a goodies box which is accessible direct from the app. Users can replay ds to claim rewards, or visit the mobile site linked to the ad."
