Mozy 2.0 provides local and off-site backup

Your IT - Home IT

Version 2.0 of Mozy's Windows backup client gives the option of backing up to an external disk as well as to the cloud, and also boasts speed improvements.

There are plenty of remote backup services around, and most of them - including Mozy - have a free option for those who need to back up a relatively small amount of data. The new version of the Mozy client for Windows delivers an interesting twist: backup to an external drive in addition to the company's servers.

This provides for faster restoration, and may significantly reduce the amount of time before large files are backed up as the local backup is performed prior to the remote backup.

Officials at the EMC-owned company claim Mozy 2.0 also prepares files up to 75% faster than previous versions, and transfers up to 25% faster. It also sports a revamped user interface.

The free version of the service for home users provides 2GB of storage (one or two computers per account); $US4.95 per month buys unlimited backup space for up to five computers.

MozyPro (for business users) costs $US3.95 plus $US0.50 per GB per month, or  $US6.95 plus $US0.50 per GB per month for servers. MozyPro for servers includes  SQL and Exchange support.

A Mac version of Mozy 2.0 is promised for later in the year.
