Primus has launched its NBN-based FTTH services in parts of Tasmania including Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point.
Primus' standard NBN Tasmania broadband plans start from $39.95 per month when bundled with a phone plan (minimum $24.95 per month including local and national calls) on a 12 or 24-month plan.
A special offer on the iPrimus Max FTTH plan gives half price rates ($44.97 per month) for the first six months. The plan includes local, national and mobile calls as well as high speed broadband (5GB peak, 10GB off-peak), and a free wireless router.
Off-peak times aren't particularly generous - 2am to 10am - and speed limiting kicks in when either the peak or off-peak quotas are exceeded. For comparison, the mainstream iPrimus Platinum bundle offers 7GB peak and 14GB off-peak (midnight to noon), line rental, modem, and local calls for $89.95 per month.
So FTTH subscribers appear to be sacrificing some data volume and off-peak hours in return for speed. But if you can't get a good ADSL connection, that might be a price worth paying.
As iPrimus general manager, marketing and products, Andrew Sims said, "It's a great opportunity for broadband users in these towns to experience broadband for the next generation at lightning speeds. Previously, they would have missed out on competitive broadband and telephone offerings due to being outside metropolitan areas. These plans bring real competition for broadband services to these areas."
