Neighbourhood Cable plans upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0

Your IT - Home IT

TransACT subsidiary, Neighbourhood Cable Pty is to upgrade its HFC networks in Ballarat, Geelong and Mildura to DOCSIS 3.0 specifications over the next nine months.

The first services will be available towards the end of 2010. The company said the upgrade would bring increased quality of service and IPv6 support. Neighbourhood cable says it will spend $1.5m t in the first year and $3.5m over the next five years on the upgrade.

It will deploy the Cisco Cable Modem Terminating System (CMTS) hardware and associated software (Cisco uBR10012 CMTS).

According to Neighbourhood Cable, "Cisco is a world leader in HFC networks and their products will provide N+1 redundancy, IPv6 compatibility and extra capacity in downstream and upstream channels. Cisco currently provides the existing network CMTS and this upgrade is a natural evolution of their product suite."

CEO Ivan Slavich, said: "This upgrade enables us to improve broadband speeds to our existing customers, and also offer new ultra-fast broadband plans equivalent to the Federal Government's NBN."

(This is not strictly correct. HFC is a shared network; the 100Mbps total capacity of the coax cable will be shared between several households. With a passive optical FTTH network, each customer gets a dedicated 100Mbps).

Neighbourhood cable claims that its HFC network is "provisioned for speeds of around 30Mbps, far in excess of ADSL or ADSL 2+.

Neighbourhood Cable's suite of products and services caters to both residential and business customers and includes fixed-line phone, broadband and cable television. Corporate services include domain name registration, website hosting, ethernet and virtual private networks. The networks pass a total of 95,000 households in the three cities.
