Unwired to go live in Melbourne April 5

Your IT - Home IT

Unwired says it will launch its wireless broadband access service in Melbourne on April 5, initially with coverage of the CBD and inner city suburbs.

Unwired says that, at that date, the network will cover "all or part of": Melbourne CBD (South, West and East), Port Melbourne, Albert Park, Carlton (North and South), South Yarra, Bentleigh, Ormond, McKinnon, Patterson, Richmond (East, West and South), Hawthorn, St Kilda, Docklands, Toorak, Fitzroy and Middle Park.

In May, coverage will be extended to Flemington, Clifton Hill, Collingwood and North Melbourne. Unwired says it will complete the first phase of its Melbourne network, which will cover around 25 percent of the Melbourne population, in the second half of 2006. Further expansion of its Melbourne network will then take place as more customers join, the company said.

"Our Sydney experience gives us the advantage of knowing what type of person is more likely to be an early adopter of the Unwired service so we are focussing on suburbs that fit this demographic first," CEO David Spence said.
