WD reckons the consumer market is ready for solid state drives. But price is still a barrier.
WD has launched a trio of solid state drives (SSDs) targeting consumer applications that can take advantage of high read speeds.
The WD SiliconEdge Blue SSDs are available in three capacities: 64 GB ($A349), 128 GB ($A649) and 256 GB ($1229).
With 1 TB disk drives available for around $A100, you need a good reason to adopt SSD - such as the need for speed, shock tolerance, or silent or low-power operation.
The The WD SiliconEdge Blue is rated at up to 250 MBps (read) and 170 MBps (write). Features include advanced wear-levelling and error correction control, as well as TRIM and NCQ command support
"The development of the WD SiliconEdge Blue product family leverages WD's extensive experience in designing and manufacturing highly reliable storage products and the company's worldwide sales and distribution network to accelerate SSD technology adoption by OEMs, technology enthusiasts, gamers and road warriors," said Michael Hajeck, senior vice president and general manager of WD's solid state storage business unit.
