Telstra has unveiled a new security operations centre (SOC) in Canberra, designed to provide managed security services to enterprise and government customers across Australia.

According to Telstra the 1300 square metre facility is ASIO T4 accredited and will use state-of-the-art monitoring tools to manage the security of Telstra's core infrastructure alongside the networks Telstra manages for a range of enterprise and government customers. It will initially employ 40 security staff but has the capacity to grow to 100 staff and is fully integrated with Telstra's existing network monitoring facilities.

T4 is ASIO's protective security section . It offers a range of security advisory services to government bodies, on a cost recovery basis including risk reviews, specific advise on security measures, the development of security plans. It services are designed primarily for Australian government departments, agencies and business enterprises but can be provided to others, with the written approval of the attorney-general, provided that a Commonwealth interest can be shown.

Opening the facility the head of Telstra Enterprise & Government, Nerida Caesar said that "There is growing demand from both our enterprise and government customers for managed security services, with Frost and Sullivan predicting the Australian market for network security to grow by 4.3 percent per year to become a $227 million) market by 2015.

"The SOC enables us to help customers to effectively reduce and deal with security risks, comply with regulations and policies, protect their critical assets, and enhance operational safety."

The SOC will be integrated with Telstra's existing network monitoring facilities: The Telstra Global Operations Centre (GOC) in Melbourne that manages Telstra's national and global networks and the Telstra Managed Network Operations Centre (MNOC) in Sydney, which opened in October last year and which offers a range of managed network services to customers. It manages more than 1,100 corporate networks
