Latest version of Skype supports video calling

Your IT - Home IT

Skype has released a new version of its software (Skype 2.0) that includes integrated video-calling.

Skype 2.0, which is in beta and for Windows only, allows users to see each other in full-screen video or in a PC window via webcam. According to Skype, callers can use almost any webcam. However Skype has partnered with Creative and Logitech and is selling Skype-certified webcams through retailers in the US such as RadioShack as well as its online store. Less than two weeks ago, Skype announced a deal to distribute various related items in 3,500 RadioShack outlets in the USA.

Logitech says it worked with Skype to certify its QuickCam webcams and PC headsets for use with Skype Video feature. "Logitech worked closely with Skype on usability and performance to ensure people experience fully synchronised, high-quality video and audio communications over the Internet."

According to Logitech the two companies plan to jointly market Skype Video and Logitech webcams and headsets worldwide, "engaging in regional promotions and direct outreach to Logitech customers and the Skype community".

The new software also has a number of other new features: It allows for integration with Microsoft Outlook. Users can call contacts in Outlook with a single click and it supports custom ringtones and an integrated view of the Skype contact's location and time zone information.

Users can create various groups of contacts such as co-workers, personal friends, and relatives, and start conference calls, file sharing, and chats involving the entire group.
