Axis will continue to support its own VAPIX interface specification.

"We fully believe that end users and integrators benefit the most from having the possibility to choose best-of-breed solutions when designing their surveillance systems," said Frännlid.

In related news, Axis announced the P5534, a HD (720p) indoor surveillance camera with 18x optical zoom.

"Axis is committed to bringing HDTV-quality video to the surveillance industry, and we have done it first with fixed cameras and now PTZ [pan, tilt and zoom] cameras," said Wai King Wong, Axis' country manager for ANZ.

"Axis P5534 not only has the best video quality in its class, it is also designed for easy and reliable installation indoors. It is protected from dust and dripping water, and supports High Power over Ethernet," he added.

The camera also features automatic pan, tilt and zoom in response to activity in the image, two-way audio, provision for external sensors and relays, and an SDHC memory card slot for local recording.

Also new are the P7701 video decoder (allowing the display of surveillance camera feeds on analog or digital monitors and projectors), the P8221 network audio I/O module (for cameras that lack audio and sensor/relay connections), and the T8412 handheld device for displaying live video while setting up a camera.
