NIH, Wikimedia work toward better online health and medical information

Your IT - Home IT

For the first time, the Wikimedia Foundation is working with a health sciences institution to improve the availability of online health and medical information.

People often look for health information on the internet, but they don't always get the good oil.

A collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) may help ordinary people obtain accurate and current information.

A one-day 'Wikipedia Academy' will be held at the NIH's Bethesda campus in Maryland with the goal of teaching the philosophy and mechanics of Wikipedia.

This will be the first official Wikipedia Academy in the US, the first time the Foundation has worked with a federal agency, and the first time it was worked with a health sciences institution.

The intention is to increase the amount of publicly available health and medical information, and more generally to find ways of bridging the culture divide between Wikipedia and the research community.

"We're incredibly excited," said Sue Gardner, executive director of the Foundation. "With the broad range of experts from the National Institutes of Health, we see a great opportunity for increasing the quality of all health-related information on Wikipedia, benefiting users of Wikipedia from all over the world."

The NIH also sounds positive about the event. "NIH works to ensure that the information it provides on science and health is of the highest quality and reaches the widest audience," said John Burklow, NIH associate director for communications and public liaison.

"We look forward to this opportunity to collaborate with the Wikimedia Foundation and participate in a resource that is used by millions of people around the world."

According to Wikimedia's Meta-wiki, "Wikipedia Academies are public outreach events, usually lasting one or two days, designed to coach academics and other subject matter experts in how to contribute to Wikipedia, as well as to encourage them to view Wikipedia as friendly."

Previous Wikipedia Academies have been held in Göttingen, Mainz, Johannesburg, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Lund and Tel Aviv.
