Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
NetComm's new 3G18Wn doesn't include a 3G modem, but it does provide a front-panel USB socket for one. So you can take a 'dongle' modem on the road along with your notebook, but when you're at home or in the office you can share the connection with other computers and devices.
Four 10/100 Ethernet ports are provided for this purpose, along with 802.11n Wi-Fi.
The 3G18Wn is said to be compatible with UMTS, HSDPA, EV-DO and 3G USB modems. No names are mentioned, but NetComm claims buyers can "choose from an extensive range of modems from most major 3G carriers."
The device also has a WAN port allowing the connection of an ADSL, cable or satellite modem. Automatic failover to 3G is supported.
The 3G18Wn runs on 12V DC (a mains adaptor is supplied), and NetComm suggests it can be used to share a connection in a car. Since it measures 157 x 127 x 30mm (excluding antennas), that seems feasible, though you would need an appropriate power cable.
Just beware of leaving it in the cabin when the car is parked on a sunny day, as the temperature can easily exceed the 60 degree non-operating limit.
