Australian organisations 'forward looking' on encryption

Your IT - Home IT

Using encryption in multiple applications tends to increase operational costs, due to the complexities of key management. And that's where PGP comes in.

According to Dunkelberger, PGP's software provides a single console for managing keys across multiple applications, and moves encryption down the stack to make it transparent to users.

Among the key types supported are Windows Mobile, TPM (Intel or Infineon), RIM and X.509.

77 percent of respondents described automated key management as important or very important, and the same proportion said the same about the ability to administer encryption through a single interface.

Given these straightened times, it's interesting to note that 72 percent of respondents thought a platform approach to encryption could reduce operational costs.

"This study continues to break new ground in identifying enterprise IT security trends," said Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of The Ponemon Institute.

"Businesses in Australia have grappled with the new realities of data breaches over the past 12 months. In response, organisations are spending significant portions of their encryption budgets on key management and are looking for more complete solutions from a single vendor instead of point products."
