Koeck explained that because most office documents were no longer than three pages, a quick warmup time is important to allow energy saving features to kick in as frequently as possible without impinging on users. Most of the new LaserJets are ready to print the first page in eight seconds, he claimed, typically two to three times faster than competing models. Being able to return quickly to sleep can reduce overall power consumption by up to 50 percent.

Other green features of HP's announcements include duplex printing as the default setting where supported by the hardware (the company says a Fortune 500 company would save around 700 tons of paper by using duplex printing, and paper manufacture consumes large quantities of water).

Environmental responsibility is now high on the business agenda, said Horacio Miranda, enterprise business development manager at HP's imaging and printing group, with around 80 percent of enterprise requests for proposal evaluating environmental aspects, according to the company's internal research.

HPs new printers and MFDs fall into the following families:

Color LaserJet CP1215 (low end colour laser)
Color LaserJet CP1510 (networked colour laser using HP's new ColourSphere toner and aimed at in-house marketing)
Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP (low end colour laser MFD with fax)
Color LaserJet CN6040 (high end colour laser A3 MFD with a variety of finishing options including a booklet maker)
LaserJet M1319 (low end mono laser MFD with fax)
LaserJet P4015 (workgroup mono laser printer with security features)
LaserJet P4510 (high speed mono laser printer with security features)
LaserJet M9040/M9050 (departmental laser MFD with optional fax)
Officejet J6400 (inkjet MFD with wireless networking, duplex printing and fax)
Officejet Pro L7000 (inkjet MFD with higher speed and lower cost per page than competitor laser models)
Officejet Pro K8600 (networked A3 printer with low cost per page)
Officejet J4580 (low end colour inkjet MFD giving high quality output at a lower cost per page than laser printers)
