Satellite CRC plans rural broadband satellite trial

Your IT - Home IT

Researchers at the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems (CRCSS) are preparing to trial a satellite broadband network that they claim will be capable of providing high quality communication services anywhere in Australia. The trial will take place in South Australia and NSW from October. The main service provided initially to the remote communities will be affordable high quality voice communications and Internet connections. In time, according to the CRC, the whole suite of broadband services including news, cable TV, entertainment and education will be possible.

The CRC claims that, "by targeting a satellite beam toward a particular region of Australia, satellite-based services can reach every part of the country, even the most isolated areas." Other than this, its announcement of the planned trial gave no details.
